Happy 4th of July!
Happy 4th of July to all my American friends out there! It’s going to be a very special one I heard…This year the fireworks are going to be even more spectacular! Macy’s has put together a fabulous tribute to celebrate America’s birthday, Independence and also 400 years of the exploration of of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson. And here is where to see them!
These are photos I took while visiting Central Park last year of the Bethesda Fountain designed by Emma Stebbins in 1868 but that was actually unveiled in 1873 . She was actually the first woman to received a public commission for a mayor art work in the city of New York. And that was remarkable! I felt in love with this angel looking sculpture…and researched about design and what symbolises.
This is an eight foot bronze statue, a winged female figured standing on top of the fountain where water sprouts and cascades down the pool below. A beautiful neo-classical sculpture. She holds a lily in one hand symbolizing purity and blesses the waters with the other one.
It is also known as the Angel of the Waters and celebrates the purifying of the city’s water supply when the Croton Aqueduct opened in 1842. And this name has been inspired by the Gospel of Saint John, Chapter five where there is a story about an angel with healing powers on the pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem. There are four cherubs beneath that symbolize: Temperance, Purity, Health and Peace.
I love Central Park! It’s such a special place. We have seen it in many movies and some of my favorites are: An Affair To Remember, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Way We Were and so many more… I wish I was there again…hopefully soon…
