Learn with me…experience romance and a wedding in the 1300’s…during Medieval Times…

2010 February 8

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching…romance is in the air…Today I want to take you right back to the Middle Ages…and be part of a marriage ceremony in the 1300th century. Let’s go to Tuscany in Cortona, Italy.

Feel Yourself…

in the warm ambiance of Cortona, overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana, originally fortified by the Umbrians, claimed by the Etruscans, touched by the Renaissance, almost unchanged for centuries, one of Tuscany’s jewels.

Cortona is a little-known haven of Etruscan tombs, medieval alleyways, Renaissance art, sweeping views and small-town ambience. The medieval-themed Archidado Joust Festival takes place between May and June. It’s a week of costumed festivities and events that traces its origins back to the middle Ages.

Picture Yourself…

among the sights and sounds of beautiful and romantic Tuscany: olive groves, vineyards, centuries-old buildings, winding streets, texture and vibrant sunlight.

Save the date! I will be teaching an exclusive workshop in Tuscany, Cortona.

My Paper Head Dresses and Heraldic Fashion Workshop during this special event…You can be part of both!

Experience…

the joy of creating paper headdresses and heraldic fashions in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere with the expert instruction of a nationally know artist and instructor and the camaraderie of a small group of learners.

It will be a week-long creative experience for all of us where we will embrace the heraldry, history and romance of this fabulous place. You will learn paper art techniques to make your own crowns and tiaras in Etruscan and Medieval style. You will learn how to design heraldic fashion pieces to wear.

But there is more…a giveaway and even a surprise project waiting for you! To be revealed later…

We will also enjoy a day trip to Florence; will visit the best shops for more inspiration and to gather new embellishments, ribbons and papers for our projects.

Enjoy…

great Italian food, delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas, history and the hospitality of the people of Cortona.

Archidado Joust Festival:

This story says that most beautiful young woman arrived in Cortona on January 8 of 1397, escorted by Uguccio and the bridegroom. And attending the nuptials were guests Castello and  Niccolò Castracani, each followed by ten horses. Also, Ottavio Ubaldini, his wife and 20 horses, the landlord of Braschi and other gentlemen with smaller escorts, many of trumpets, pipes, players of several instruments, fencers and performers.

Among the guests were also the Malatestas from Rimini. Castiglione Aretino from Isola Maggiore and the Trasimeno lake renters. They all sent gifts….and the most admired was a girdle made with pearls value 100 florins donated by Castello. There was a vermillion velvet from Florence, a horse and two pieces of a precious cloth interwoven in silk and gold sent by the Marquesas Malatesta…also a jewels chest.

You can read full Paper Head Dresses & Heraldic Fashion Workshop description right here. I will see you all there under the Tuscan sun!

Feeling a little Rococo today…totally in vibrant pink…Marie style…

2010 February 6

Happy Pink Saturday! Today I feel inspired…by the colour pink in Rococo style, which is now widely recognized as a major period in European art. If you follow my blog you probably already watched my latest TV segment here?

I had this tee on display with Marie Antoinette in pink Rococo and the cameras loved it! Isn’t it vibrant? Like modern Rococo

Did you know that Rococo appeared first in the decorative arts and interior design? And it got to Great Britain as the “French taste” but it was never widely adopted as an architectural style. Rococo was strongly felt in silverwork, porcelain, and silks. Rococo originated in the purely decorative arts, the style showed clearly in painting. Painters used delicate colors and curving forms, decorating their canvases with cherubs and myths of love. Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun’s (1755–1842) style also shows a great deal of Rococo influence, particularly in her portraits of Marie Antoinette. My favorite!

In case you have plans to work on your craft projects this weekend…I added new pink boxes and kits for you here.

If you read Altered Couture, you will find my Marie tees featured in the February-Spring issue now on stands.

Let’s head over to our host Beverly’s blog “How Sweet the Sound” for more pinkness. Thanks so much for visiting me and have a great weekend!

A Flash From the Past…Follow Me…do you remember this song?

2010 February 5
by Gabriela Delworth

Happy Friday everyone! This week “took forever”! It seemed so long…but it’s over now. I don’t know about you but I always liked listening to music. I really miss my big bands and perhaps this feeling makes me a little old…that’s all right…I love Genesis, Phil Collins and all those fabulous songs…don’t you?

They bring back very dear memories to my heart…Live concerts are the best, although I would rather watch them on TV or on Youtube. “Follow Me, Follow You” is one of my most favorite songs.

Stay with me,
My love I hope you’ll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you
Oh my love

In your arms,
I feel so safe and so secure
Everyday is such a perfect day to spend
Alone with you

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

With the dawn,
Oh I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now
Fading away

I can say
The night is long but you are here
Close at hand, oh I’m better for the smile you give
And while I live

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year there will be

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year…

Are you a fan? Which are your favorite songs? Because of course we all have more than one. Enjoy the music and have an awesome weekend!

Rock My Heart…Hand Painted Valentine’s Tee…and TV Segment to watch…

2010 February 3

Remember the latest Decorating Tees  TV segment I did the past January 20th on Daytime York? Now you can watch it right here on my blog! Click on the image above and watch it on Explorer {it doesn’t open nicely on Firefox}.

I don’t know about you but I love wearing my jeans all the time…cool and comfortable. How about wearing a Tee for Valentine’s Day? Of course, all depends on what you will be doing. Wings have been popular on Tees for while and I thought about incorporating them in a design with a heart-crown template and crystals. Glamorous! Make this project now and you will have your Tee ready to wear way ahead of time. Let’s get started with it!

MATERIALS:

Black Tee {mine is V-Neck}

Paint brushes in different sizes

Tulip® Fashion Form™

Tulip® Soft Paint {Matte Glacier White 4OZ}

Tulip® Fashion Graffiti™ Dimensional Fabric Paint Taggers™ {Hub Cap}

Tulip® Fashion Glitter Bond™

Aleene’s® Fabric Fusion™ Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive™

Tulip® Fashion Glitter™ {Multi Ultra Fine Crystal, Silver Ultra Fine Holographic, Red Fine Jewel, Gold Fine Jewel}

Tulip® Glam-It-Up!™ Iron-On Crystals™

Tulip® Glam-It-Up!™ Fashion Art Tweezers™

Tulip® Cordless Heat Setting Tool™

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • 1- Wash your Tee but do not use softener. Hang to dry.
  • 2- Place the Tulip® Fashion Form™ inside your vest. It will give you great support to work on and it will prevent materials from staining the back of the Tee.
  • 3- Make your own stencils using sturdy plastic, like a see through plastic bag.
  • 4- Draw a heart on one sheet of plastic and cut out the inner image.
  • 5- Then draw a wing and repeat step.
  • 6- You will place your wing stencil on the Tee and will secure it with tape.
  • 7- Then place your heart wing and repeat same step.
  • 8- Apply Aleene’s® Fabric Fusion™ Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive™ using a brush on heart first and cover the surface.
  • 9- Using Tulip® Fashion Glitter™ Red glitter sprinkle on it. Repeat step if necessary to cover full surface.
  • 10- Let dry completely.
  • 12- Using the Tulip® Fashion Glitter Gold Fine Crystal & Silver Fine Holographic sprinkle glitter alternating colours on the surface before paint dries. Let dry completely.
  • 13- Repeat step using Tulip® Fashion Glitter Crystal. But only apply on small areas giving a shinning effect to heart.
  • 14- Apply Aleene’s® Fabric Fusion™ Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive™ using a brush on wing and cover the surface.
  • 15- Add details using Tulip® 3D Fashion Paint {Puffy White} alternating with Tulip® Paint Taggers™ {Silver}.
  • 16- Peel off Tulip® Sticky Fabric Stencils crown stencil and adhere it above the heart on the Tee.
  • 16- Using Tulip® Fashion Glitter™ Gold glitter on crown and cover full surface.
  • 17- Let dry completely.
  • 18- Gather Tulip® Glam-It-Up! ™ Iron-On Crystals™.
  • 19- Place crystals on fabric. Turn Tulip® Cordless Heat Setting Tool™, hold it straight up and touch top of crystal. Heat will melt the glue. Add crystals one by one.

TIP: Although paint and glitter usually dry in about four hours I always let my Tees dry until the day after. Then I give them a rinse with soap for delicate clothes and hang to dry.

Interested in learning how to decorate your own Tees with me? I will be teaching new fun workshops in the Spring here in Toronto. Stay tuned!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

How to elevate a recycled envelope…a Valentine’s project for men…

2010 February 2

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and many of us are rushing preparations for such a special event! Are you one of us? If you think most of Valentine’s craft projects are “feminine” oriented, aren’t they? But what about men? Don’t we expect them to impress us with romantic details? Well, then the last thing we can do to help “this process” is perhaps to share some tips with them…

I love recycling and actually the challenge to think what to do with things. Today I am sharing a very simple project using materials you all have available if you check your junk mail, envelopes. I chose one of those with the plastic window to “fancy it up” a little. And the best part is that it will cost you NADA. Junk mail is FREE. Let’s get to it!

MATERIALS:

Recycled envelope with plastic window

Ribbon {mine is satin in this project}

Craft Punch {and yes, I love Martha’s craft punches}

White glue

Glue gun and glue gun sticks

Decorative paper scraps {think about men colours}

I told you that it would cost you NADA, didn’t I?

INSTRUCTIONS:

1- Cut out and remove the plastic window from your envelope using sharp scissors.

2- Measure and cut a piece of decorative paper to fit the window.

3- Add glue to the edges of the paper cut out and glue it to the inside of the window {inside the envelope}.

4- Using Martha’s craft punch make a couple of punch paper shapes to decorate your envelope.

5- Cut a length of ribbon and tie it your envelope with a simple knot.

6- Using the glue gun, add a glue dot to the back of your punch paper shape and glue it to the knot.

And you are all done. Isn’t it the most elegant envelope you have made from your pile of junk?

Happy Valentine’s Day! Show off your creative skills and how much you care with a special message inside…Stay tuned for more Valentine’s projects.

Cupids in Pink you can make…cute and romantic…

2010 January 30

Happy Pink Saturday! Today I want to share a Valentine’s Cupid Heart project {by popular demand} I was asked to post again…This is a great project to use supplies you might have around your studio as seen on the image above. But should you need more variety you can find some from my stash here.

MATERIALS:

Vintage angel image

Crepe paper {pink and white}

Cardboard heart shape

Vintage ribbon

Glitter

Paper flowers

A golden crown made out of gift wrapping paper

Paper doily {white}

Wall paper

Silver pipe cleaners

And a banner

INSTRUCTIONS AND TIPS

1- Fold the white crepe paper like an accordion {this will form the nice ruffle at the edge of the heart}, always working with small pieces at a time about six inches long {it is easier this way}.

2- You can also use needle and thread and sew it if you prefer, but it is not necessary as you will be gluing it onto the heart shape as you work.

3- Once you are finished and the ruffle is all around the heart glue one of the wallpaper pieces to the back of the heart with white glue or glue stick. Then glue the second piece of wallpaper to the front of your heart the same way. The crepe paper ruffle edges will be “sandwich” in between the wallpaper pieces and will look neat. Let it dry.

TIP: For a perfectly smooth surface, place some books on top of it and let it dry. And remember to spread the glue evenly to avoid lumps.

4- You can sprinkle or brush {if you like to use glitter glue} the edges with glitter and let dry.

TIP: Glitter glue dries as shinny as glitter flakes.

5- Measure and cut the vintage ribbon and glue it around the edge of the wallpaper heart using a glue gun.

6- Your doily combined with the pink crepe paper piece will give more dimensions to the front of the ornament. To make a rosette with the pink crepe paper, you need to use needle and thread {also pink}, start folding the paper as an accordion and sew the edges {not too tight as the paper will tear} to form the rosette.

TIP: It is always better to have a “fluffier” rosette and being short.

7- You can lightly pull as you sew and when you have a full rosette finish it on the back like a piece of fabric. Once you glue it to the doily it won’t move anymore. Now you have the rosette glued {with glue gun} to the doily.

8- Sprinkle or brush {if you like to use glitter glue} the angel wings, the edge of the doily and crepe paper rosette with glitter and let dry. Crown the angel with the golden crown made out of gift wrapping paper.

9- You will now place the doily-rosette piece in the middle of the heart, you will center the angel and glue it {glue gun} in the mid part.

TIP: Crepe paper is great to work with if you like some movement; you can place it flat or “style” it with your fingers a bit.

10- It is time to place your banner using two tiny drops of glue {glue gun} on the edges. Then place it loose in the mid section as a ribbon. This will add movement and grace to the composition.

11- You will place now the two paper flowers, one at the bottom corner of the banner and the other on the opposite one {remember that you can design your own composition.

12- You are almost done! Now you will form a loop with the pipe cleaners {they bend easily} and glue it with a tiny drop {glue gun} to the back of the heart.

TIP: Always glue it with a tiny drop, it will become invisible.

13- And you now have your own Valentine’s Cupid Heart!

Let’s now visit Beverly at “How Sweet the Sound” for more pink goodness right here!
